In 2009, 100 specially selected Year 11 and 12 students will enter a unique year-long relationship with La Boite. As La Boite Ambassadors they'll gain special insights into the workings of a professional theatre company. David Berthold is one of Australia’s most prominent theatre directors. He was Artistic Director of Sydney’s Griffin Theatre Company between 2003 and 2006, transforming it into one of the nation’s most visible and successful arts companies. He was also Artistic Director of the Australian Theatre for Young People (1999-2003) - building the company into the world’s largest youth theatre with many national and international collaborations - Associate Director of Sydney Theatre Company (1994-99), and Artistic Associate of the Queensland Theatre Company (1991-94). He has also directed work for Melbourne Theatre Company, Company B at Belvoir Street, the Sydney Opera House, Playbox Theatre, Black Swan, NIDA, QUT, La Boite, Opera Queensland, Auckland Theatre Company, the Royal National Theatre in London, and Theater an der Parkaue in Berlin. He was the Festival Director of World Interplay 2007, the world's largest festival of young playwrights.
David is looking forward to the new position and to the challenges that it brings.
La Boite’s story is one of the great narratives of the Australian theatre. It’s a company that has emerged from deep community roots into a position near the centre of Queensland’s burgeoning theatrical family. Sean Mee has done a terrific job of growing the company and shepherding it into its wonderful new home, and I hope I can build on his work to even further enhance La Boite’s impact in Queensland and beyond. I’m very much looking forward to returning to Brisbane and to getting started.
