Australian Theatre Directors’ Conference11 & 12 September 2006Australian National UniversitySTOP PRESS: Aubrey Mellor (Head of NIDA) and Terence Clarke (acclaimed director) will give the keynote addressesThis exciting new conference aims to engage professional directors, theatrical practitioners, academics and students of theatre in dialogue and practical exercises about: the techniques involved in directing; the issues faced by directors in Australian theatre; pre-production; interpretation; production processes; actor-director interaction; and director-designer interaction. This year’s conference theme is ‘Changing Direction’ - where is Australian directing heading? what is the Australian ‘style’? and how is the director’s craft practised in Australia? The conference also provides a valuable opportunity for directors to network with their industry peers.CALL FOR PAPERSDirecting in Australia is both establishing itself and changing. Creating a dialogue about the art, function and form of directing will advance the understanding of this young craft. Professional directors and academics are invited to present a 20 minute paper to the conference. The paper would also then be considered for inclusion in the conference publication ‘Changing Direction’ to be published by Australian Scholarly Publishing. Topics to consider:• Australian directing style            • Director versus Playwright• The director’s changing craft    • Interpreting the action• Preproduction                             • The actor and director• Creative team interaction         • Collaborative dramaSubmission GuidelinesPlease visit www.directorsconference.com for more information, to register for the conference and to submit an abstract. Submission deadline is: 15 July 2006. CALL FOR MASTERCLASSESAn integral part of the art and craft of directing is practical skill, experience and discussion. For this reason, the conference will incorporate masterclasses of classic and contemporary scenes led by experienced directors. Masterclasses will also include an extended period for questions and further workshopping of the scene with actors. Should you like to lead a masterclass, please complete the registration form indicating your preference on our website.Actor and director interaction is not the only masterclass format. Other possible masterclass formats include exploring the interaction between director, set designer and costume designer by way of a mock production meeting between the creative parties. The techniques used by directors to achieve a cohesion between the creative team can be examined. Is diplomacy the best strategy or can a strong unyielding vision be the best path for the best outcome.CALL FOR OTHER PARTICIPANTSNot only those who present papers or masterclasses can participate in the conference. The conference is open to anyone: amateur directors, aspiring directors, student directors, theatre academics, English academics or anyone with an interest in the art and craft of directing. Attending the conference you will be able to listen to, respond to and question some of Australia’s best directors. There is ample time set aside for questions after each paper presentation and masterclass. There are also generous morning teas, afternoon teas, lunches, coffee all day and the conference dinner. All of these breaks are designed to enable participants to discuss the ideas of the day and to network with their colleagues.Registration cost is $100 which includes all catering for the two days and also the official conference dinner.
